The US and Chinese governments are building new mobile networks, with the US building the largest of its own, and China building a rival.
Key points:The US has built its own mobile network in an attempt to reduce its dependence on Chinese telecom firms, while China has built a rivalOne of the US networks, called T-Mobile US, has been accused of using Chinese technology and will not be launched until 2020Chinese telecom firms Huawei and ZTE have been accused by US lawmakers of stealing intellectual property from US firms Huawei has been fined more than $6 billion by US regulators for stealing patents from Samsung.
Both companies have denied any wrongdoing.
The US-China alliance, which dates back to the 1950s, was supposed to focus on mobile and internet infrastructure, but it is being used to build networks for military and security purposes.
It has now come to be known as “strategic communication” to protect national security and the ability of the American government to communicate to the Chinese government, officials told Reuters.
China’s state-owned telecommunications company, China Mobile, has also been accused.
The United States, which has been the largest telecom market in the world, relies on China to supply telecom equipment and services.
“It is clear that the US government has made a serious decision to deploy Chinese telecommunications to meet a strategic need that it has identified,” said Josh Lowensohn, senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
“This is a serious problem for US security interests in the Asia Pacific region, and the US has long been accused and rightly so of over-reliance on China.”
“But China’s network is much smaller than what we have in the US,” he added.
“The Chinese are building a lot more than the US.”
They’re building it from scratch, so they don’t have the same level of resources and expertise that the Americans have.
“Lowensohen said China had also been criticized by US congressional leaders for not having the right equipment to be able to handle the high-bandwidth traffic.”
We’ve heard from the US Congress many times that they want a very large Chinese telecom, but they don to have the equipment that can handle the traffic that we have,” he said.”
China’s networks are very efficient, they’re very powerful.
The Chinese have been able to make significant improvements.””
We believe they can compete with US networks in the short term, but we’re not going to let that happen.
“Chinese telecom giant Huawei has also come under fire for alleged fraud in the United States.
Huawei’s main business is in the telecommunications sector, but is also the world’s biggest telecom operator.
The company is also suspected of illegally spying on foreign governments.
The government has also accused Huawei of stealing US technology in the past, including in 2012.”
Huawei has a history of stealing technologies that have been developed by US companies, including technologies that US firms have licensed to them,” said Senator Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.”
And the Chinese are stealing these technologies.””
If China continues to do that, it will cause the United State and the rest of the world to pay a very significant price.””
The Huawei acquisition raises serious questions about the quality of US national security networks, and whether the US is serious about keeping them,” Warner added.
The American government has repeatedly accused China of stealing American technology and technology that has helped build its military.
The Justice Department has also filed lawsuits in several jurisdictions against Huawei and other Chinese telecoms firms in the last year, accusing them of stealing the intellectual property of American firms.
China’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
