Sanders, the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, on Tuesday called for a “major shift” in the way the country deals with climate change, with the former secretary of state accusing Trump of trying to “take our jobs” from the United States.
“I have been wrong on this issue for a long time.
I am going to continue to be wrong,” Sanders said at a town hall event in Las Vegas.
Sanders, who campaigned with the Vermont senator in Nevada earlier this month, has long been a critic of Trump’s campaign and said the billionaire businessman should step aside for a period of time.
Trump responded to Sanders’ criticism in a tweet.
“Sanders is a disgrace to the Democratic Party and our country.
He wants to take our jobs.
I will NEVER accept that,” he said.”
He wants to be our president and I will not take it!”
Trump added in a separate tweet.
He also mocked Sanders’ plan to address climate change on the campaign trail.
“Bernie Sanders is calling for a major shift in the climate change policy of the United State, and that’s why he wants to have his coronation in 2020,” Trump said.
“Hillary Clinton has made it clear that she wants to continue with the status quo.
We’ll see if she can get away with it, or whether we’ll get to the point where we’re going to have to make major changes to how we deal with the climate.”
The former secretary was referring to a recent report from the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that predicted that global temperatures could rise by more than 4 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, more than twice the current rate.
The report also warned that such warming could cause widespread shortages of water and food in developing nations, leading to the breakdown of societies.
“That’s not a realistic situation.
That’s not realistic.
It is not realistic,” Sanders told reporters.
Trump also called for an investigation into whether Trump and his businesses have been defrauding the federal government out of millions of dollars in the past.
“It is outrageous that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization have not only been defrauded, but have actually been committing fraud against the United Nations,” Sanders, a Democrat, said.
